Born in King's Lynn, Norfolk; learnt heraldic painting from a coach-builder; travelled extensively, in South Africa (1842-1854) including as artist to the British Army in the Kafir war (1848-1851), northern Australia (1855-1856), in central Africa, where he was artist to Livingstone's Zambesi expedition (1858-1861); FRGS (1857); died of dysentery in Durban, Natal (8 May 1875)
