Painter and illustrator ; born in St Petersburg, Russia (9 May 1828) ; moved to his father's home town, Lausanne, Switzerland (1845) where he studied painting at the Musée Arlaud under J G Guignard ; moved to London (1851) and studied lithography under Ludwig Gruner ; studied watercolour painting in Rome (1853-1854) ; moved to Australia (December 1854) and worked as an illustrator for local newspapers ; founder-member of the Victorian Society for the Fine Arts in Melbourne ; returned to London (1869) and exhibited at the Royal Academy ; London adviser to the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney ; died in London (15 March 1902)
